Pakistan and Sri Lanka Commit to Enhanced Economic Cooperation at 13th JEC Session

ISLAMABAD, Jan 28: Pakistan and Sri Lanka have pledged to further strengthen their bilateral economic relations and expand cooperation across various sectors during the 13th Session of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Joint Economic Commission (JEC), held on Wednesday.
With the Pakistani delegation led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan, this session highlighted both nations’ commitment to enhancing ties and exploring new collaborative avenues.
The meeting took place in Colombo, marking a significant event where a key decision was made to establish a Joint Working Group focused on IT and Digital Economy. This reflects the resolve of both countries to collaborate on emerging technologies and digital transformation.
The discussions also covered cooperation in advanced and innovative technological fields. Furthermore, there was an emphasis on expanding industrial collaboration and boosting bilateral trade, with Sri Lanka inviting Pakistani pharmaceutical companies to explore investment opportunities.
Both nations recognized the crucial role of the SME sector in economic growth and job creation, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in this area.
Significant advancements were reported in agriculture and livestock sectors, including meat and seed trade discussions. Progress was also made towards finalizing procedures for the export of Sri Lankan pineapple and avocado to Pakistan.
In education, both countries agreed to promote Pakistan as a destination for higher education for Sri Lankan students. The importance of joint research in science and technology, and cooperation in cutting-edge sectors was underscored.
Health sector collaboration was a key discussion point, with agreements to enhance joint research, pharmaceutical cooperation, and regulatory coordination.
Discussions on maritime cooperation included potential partnerships via Karachi and Gwadar ports. Pakistan offered support to Sri Lanka in shipbuilding and maritime training, widening the scope of bilateral engagement.
The progress under the Pakistan–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was reviewed, with both sides agreeing on practical steps to increase bilateral trade volumes.
The successful conclusion of the 13th JEC session illustrates the shared commitment of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to elevate their economic partnership and convert mutual goodwill into tangible economic outcomes.
