CDA Plans Feasibility Study for Electric Tram Initiative in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Jan 28: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to initiate a feasibility study for an electric tram service in Islamabad. This effort is part of a broader strategy to introduce an environmentally friendly and modern public transport system in the federal capital.
The decision was made during a meeting at the CDA Headquarters on Wednesday, which was presided over by Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa.
During the meeting, the practical implementation and infrastructure needs for the proposed electric tram and e-bus projects were reviewed. It was resolved that the feasibility study for the electric tram would commence as soon as possible.
Officials stated that the project will involve the creation of depots, parking areas, charging infrastructure, and maintenance facilities. The tram system is expected to be developed in accordance with a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and will be integrated with Islamabad’s existing transit network.
The Chairman CDA emphasized that the project must be completely digital and cashless. Additionally, he instructed that the acquisition of carbon credits be ensured in the planning phase of this eco-friendly initiative.
He further insisted that the feasibility study should examine connecting the tram service with key city locations, particularly Islamabad International Airport, while considering current ridership data and future transport demands.
Randhawa noted that the initiative aims to provide modern and affordable transport options for residents and contribute to reducing environmental pollution. He added that all available resources are being employed to enhance urban mobility in the capital.
