Chinese Ambassador Emphasizes ‘Shanghai Spirit’ at NUST Seminar on SCO’s 25th Anniversary

ISLAMABAD, Feb 04: The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, emphasized the significance of the ‘Shanghai Spirit’—principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, and respect for civilizational diversity—at a seminar hosted by the NUST Institute of Policy Studies (NIPS), supported by the Chinese Embassy. This seminar marked the 25th anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) under the theme “25 Years of SCO: Embodying the Shanghai Spirit for a New Global Paradigm.”
The event shed light on the SCO’s expanding influence in fostering multipolarity, sustainable development, and equitable international collaboration. The seminar illustrated the SCO as an embodiment of the Global South’s aspirations for an international order based on sustainable peace, long-lasting stability, and shared prosperity, achieved through consensus-driven decision-making.
In his extensive address, Ambassador Jiang detailed the evolution of the Shanghai Spirit and highlighted its contribution in shaping the SCO into a robust platform for political trust, economic cooperation, and people-to-people connectivity, advancing the vision of a global community with a shared future.
The seminar was attended by Ambassador Nabeel Munir as the chief guest, underscoring Pakistan’s strategic engagement with the SCO. Rector NUST Dr. Muhammad Zahid Latif, who opened the seminar, described it as a showcase of innovative thinking and consultation, underlining NUST’s role through NIPS as a leading think tank conducting comprehensive research to further the SCO’s common development plans.
Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev noted the SCO has become a cornerstone of a more democratic and equitable international order, strengthening regional security and economic connectivity among member states.
Ambassador Nabeel Munir emphasized Pakistan’s view of the SCO as a vital component of its foreign policy, especially in regional economic integration, energy security, and collaborative security, reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to realize the Shanghai Spirit’s practical outcomes.
The seminar also included expert panel discussions on cooperation in green technology, digital connectivity, counterterrorism, and cultural exchange to address contemporary global challenges. The collaboration between NIPS and the Chinese Embassy was recognized as a prime example of bilateral cooperation contributing to a broader multilateral dialogue and regional stability.
