UNITED NATIONS, Feb 04: Ambassadors from the OIC Core Group on Islamophobia convened with Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, at the UN headquarters on Tuesday. This meeting took place in preparation for next month’s commemoration of the UN International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
Also in attendance was Miguel Angel Moratinos, the UN Special Envoy on Islamophobia and High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
During the meeting, the OIC Core Group discussed the upcoming March 15 event with the Assembly President, according to a press release from the Pakistan Mission to the UN.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized that the General Assembly’s resolution 76/254 had officially declared March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
He highlighted that the first commemoration took place in 2023 under Pakistan’s Chairmanship of the OIC-CFM, with subsequent commemorations held in 2024 and 2025. The International Day is of great importance to the OIC, symbolizing global unity in addressing Islamophobia.
