UNITED NATIONS, Feb 4: Ambassadors from the OIC Core Group on Islamophobia held a meeting with Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th UN General Assembly, at the UN headquarters on Tuesday. This meeting took place in anticipation of the UN’s International Day to Combat Islamophobia scheduled next month.
The meeting was also attended by Miguel Angel Moratinos, the UN Special Envoy on Islamophobia and High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
The OIC Core Group shared their views with the General Assembly President on the event planned for March 15, as stated in a press release from the Pakistan Mission to the UN.
During the discussion, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, highlighted that the General Assembly’s resolution 76/254 unanimously declared March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
He noted that the first commemoration took place in 2023 under Pakistan’s chairmanship of the OIC-CFM, followed by annual commemorations in 2024 and 2025. According to him, the International Day holds great importance for the OIC and represents global solidarity in the fight against Islamophobia.
