LAHORE, Jan 30: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has strongly affirmed his dedication to protecting press freedom and addressing both professional and welfare issues faced by journalists. He emphasized the role of a free and responsible media as crucial to a dynamic and functioning democracy.
In an informal meeting with the Pakistan English Media Association (PEMA) office-bearers at a local hotel on Friday, the speaker assured that the Punjab Assembly would take a proactive and constructive approach to address the challenges faced by working journalists.
He highlighted the government’s view of the media as an indispensable pillar of democratic governance, essential for accountability and transparency.
The speaker commended the English media for its significant contribution to shaping national discourse, promoting informed debate, and strengthening democratic institutions since Pakistan’s inception.
Recognizing the challenges and sacrifices made by journalists, he committed to taking all necessary measures to improve working conditions, ensure professional security, and enhance institutional support mechanisms.
Earlier, PEMA President Rameez Khan briefed the Speaker on the key challenges confronting journalists, including access to information and workplace protections. He stressed the need for structured and sustained engagement with policymakers.
He also outlined PEMA’s objectives, which aim to foster effective communication between media professionals, legislators, and the administration, while advocating for the rights and welfare of journalists.
