Chief Justice IHC Orders Completion of Islamabad Model Jail Project

ISLAMABAD, Jan 29: Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court Sardar Muhammad Sarfaraz Dogar has mandated the completion of the Islamabad Model Jail project by June 30 to commence the transfer of prisoners from Central Jail Adiala to Islamabad Jail by July 1, 2026.
During a Justice Committee meeting, the Chief Justice stressed the timely completion of the jail infrastructure, staffing, and other administrative tasks. He urged district judiciary judges to expedite case resolutions to address public grievances swiftly. Continuous oversight of security at judicial residences by district administration and police was instructed, along with the implementation of emergency exits and alarms in the judicial complex.
Chaired by Chief Justice Dogar, the meeting delved into the Model Jail Islamabad project and its progress details. According to the Chief Commissioner’s Office, the project is nearing completion with the final date set for June 30.
The Chief Justice advised the Interior Secretary to liaise with the Finance Secretary to tackle any construction challenges for the Model Jail ICT. A prison reforms sub-committee presented a report on the National Prison Reform Action Plan. In light of rising crime in Islamabad, particularly theft, robbery, and rape, a review of the prosecution department’s performance and the status of challans was conducted.
For effective justice, the Chief Justice emphasized obtaining forensic lab reports in rape cases to ensure culprits face consequences. He highlighted the need for proficient investigations and advocated for the training of investigation officers to gather all possible evidence against criminals.
The committee reviewed the law and order situation and the effectiveness of the Safe City surveillance system. Surveillance coverage in sensitive areas of Islamabad, including red zones and highways, is at 35%. The report noted that 19,692 individuals and 15,779 vehicles were checked, resulting in the recovery of 17 stolen vehicles and the arrest of 15 wanted criminals.
Key attendees included officials from the Ministry of Law and Justice, Interior Ministry, Islamabad’s Chief Commissioner, IG Police, and other law enforcement and judicial representatives.
