The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the recent deadly terrorist attacks across multiple locations in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The Council emphasized the necessity to bring the perpetrators to justice, following the egregious loss of 48 lives, among whom were 31 civilians, including five women and three children.
In a press release from the UN Headquarters in New York, the 15-member Council described the attacks, claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), as ‘heinous and cowardly’. The statement was issued by the UK’s Charge d’Affaires, James Kariuki, who is the current Council president.
Expressing their deepest condolences to the victims’ families, the Government, and the people of Pakistan, the Council members reaffirmed terrorism in all its forms is a grave threat to international peace and security. They conveyed wishes for a speedy and full recovery to all those injured.
The Council underscored the importance of holding accountable the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts. They urged all states to actively cooperate with the Government of Pakistan in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
Reiterating that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, the Security Council confirmed the necessity for all states to combat threats to international peace and security by adhering to the Charter of the United Nations and other global legal frameworks, including international human rights, refugee, and humanitarian laws.
