ISLAMABAD, Feb 3: President Asif Ali Zardari extended warm congratulations to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the government, and the people of Sri Lanka on the occasion of their 78th Independence Day. He conveyed these greetings on behalf of the Government and the people of Pakistan, as well as personally.
“This significant day symbolizes the unity and national pride of the Sri Lankan people, showcasing the strength and continuity of their national journey, enriched by a diverse cultural heritage and resilience. Pakistan and Sri Lanka have enjoyed a time-tested friendship, supporting each other in various circumstances,” stated the President Secretariat Media Wing.
The statement highlighted Pakistan’s support in combating terrorism in Sri Lanka, executed under the directives of the Sri Lankan people. President Zardari also lauded Sri Lanka’s role in fostering South Asian cooperation, noting its hosting of SAARC summits in 1991, 1998, and 2008 in Colombo. He expressed regret over India stalling SAARC summits for nearly 12 years, pointing out that the next summit was to be hosted by Pakistan.
“On this day, I express hope that Sri Lanka and Pakistan will continue to collaborate for enhanced South Asian security and the revival of SAARC. Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy longstanding and brotherly relations, based on mutual trust, goodwill, and shared values. Our countries have stood by each other during challenges as well as in the celebration of achievements,” he added.
The president expressed confidence that the friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka would continue to strengthen, as both nations work to deepen their bilateral relations in the years to come.
