LAHORE, Jan 30: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan reiterated his strong commitment to safeguard press freedom and address journalists’ professional and welfare concerns, emphasizing that a free and responsible media is vital for a vibrant democracy.
During an informal meeting with Pakistan English Media Association (PEMA) office-bearers at a local hotel on Friday, the speaker assured that the Punjab Assembly will proactively address the issues faced by working journalists.
He highlighted that the government considers media a key pillar of democratic governance, accountability, and transparency.
The speaker noted that since Pakistan’s inception, the English media has played a crucial role in shaping national discourse and strengthening democratic institutions through informed debate.
Recognizing the challenges and sacrifices made by journalists, he pledged measures to improve working conditions, ensure professional security, and enhance institutional support.
Earlier, PEMA President Rameez Khan briefed Speaker Ahmad on challenges such as access to information and workplace protections. He emphasized the need for sustained engagement with policymakers and the objectives of PEMA, which focus on fostering communication between media professionals, legislators, and the administration while advocating for journalists’ rights and welfare.
